The ASD Sleep Train

Wyatt is one of those kids who is obsessed with trains.  He was't always like this but somewhere along the way he became a fan.  We watch a lot of train videos.  It has gotten to the point where, if he wakes in the night and there is no train DVD playing, he will run screaming from the bedroom into the living room where he was last watching a train video before falling asleep.  After he/we get the DVD playing, he promptly falls alseep on the couch.  After a few nights, I decided to just move his toddler bed out into the living room.  My husband said we really can't have Wyatt's bed in the middle of our living space like that.  But I said, well, there is no law against it.  It's just a little odd in our corner of the world, that's all.

My next strategy is to set up a DVD player in Wyatt's room.  Up to this point he has been sleeping in a toddler bed in our room, and now he has moved to the living room, and finally he will end up in his own room which has been waiting there for him for 4 long years--it's about time!  Maybe I shouldn't encourage Wyatt in his train DVD addiction, but it seems like such a good way to get him sleeping in his own room.  I heard that a lot of ASD kids have trouble sleeping and understanding the difference between daytime and nighttime behavior (as in, don't wake Mommy up, she's sleeping!!!)  So some parents train their kids to look out a window and if it is dark outside then they are not to leave their bedroom.  Well, my kid is only 4 right now, so that day/night window training is something to think about for the future.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your post. We are just getting our son diagnosed and he has always loved dvd's for bedtime. Our public health nurse said the tv was not a great idea, but he is still sleeping in our room in our bed, and we might have to do the dvd in the bedroom thing! :) Thanks again. Let me know if it works.
