The Principle of Perspective Part One

Thought, desire and feelings. How do they integrate? I never dreamed this would be something I would give a second thought too. My world changed after my son was Dx with Autism. Like many, I was told my children ( I have two with ASD) would never lead a normal life, and need to be placed in an institution, This was my first sense that convention wisdom when it came to Autism had a long way to go in understanding what Autism * is*. I also discovered that while mainstream medicine needed an update, there were many cutting edge developmental scientists and Doctors that were leading the way to greater understanding. I am finally at a point where I see that we are ALL trying to unravel Autism and how to effectively help children live a quality of life that they want!

This is what is leading me to concentrate the next month or so in reviewing the Book * The Cradle of thought* by Peter Hobson. I read this book a few years ago, and I found this book helped me to understand what I needed to focus on with my children, as this book is one of the dozen that Dr Steven Gutstein used to help all children on the spectrum through Relationship Development Intervention ® .  read more »

Seizures Suck

John H.'s picture

....not sure I have ever mentioned that here on the blog but yes that is how I feel, and I have yet to meet anyone that disagrees with me.

Everywhere he has had one when I look at that spot or go to that place I see it and re-live it. I am luckier than others who deal with them on a daily basis or worse but for the ones that  have happened to us I can't come up with a word that is bad enough to express how bad it is....and I know alot of bad words.

This one will require him going on a second seizure med because he was at the top of the other one, there are some that we could put him on but the side effects would be worse that the seizures so he will now take 2 meds for seizures and his mother and I will be ever diligent and keep an eye out for the next one.

So we had the next one...and it still sucked....We had to change the Keppra because it was causing some aggressive behaviors that were un charactoristic of him so in the transition time between meds he had another seizure. But we move on.....

A wonderful entry on beliefs vs facts, with links

This has been a banner year for discovering how genetics causes autism- yet 25% of American parents still think that autism is *CAUSED* by vaccines.  This article gives a good roundup of the evidence, with links, as to why vaccines did not cause your child's autism. And while many other co-morbid diseases, from heavy metal poisoning to gluten allergies, can make autism WORSE, they aren't the CAUSE either.

The violence

Categories-"other stuff"  Yeah this is other stuff for sure.  Cause no one wants to really talk about it!  I was wondering, anyone intersted in talking about Autism Behaviors that can get out of control?  I mean I seriously wish anyone understood or could even relate.  I am certain that my son has the strongest fingers of any kid ever!  He can pinch me so hard it makes an instant bruise.  He definitely has a temper, but he did before the autism.  I am amazed at how quickly he goes from "just fine" to my head is exploding!  He takes Gaba and B6 in a combination that seems to help him stay a little calmer, but man... the summer can be so hard. This one is extra hard!   read more »

Todd Fugere's picture

Future Horizons www.fhautism.com has sent me a bunch of stuff to offer to Autism Bloggers. For the month of July, I will be just giving stuff away. The only catch is you have to let us all know if you liked it, hated it, etc. No catches, just good ol fashioned free stuff.

I figure with all the spam around here lately, you dedicated people deserve something for the hassle.

The first thing I have on the bidding table is 1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism or Asperger's by Ellen Notbohm and Veronica Zysk. Here's the link on Amazon. This book goes for $25.00.

First person to comment on this post, gets it...as long as you agree to post a follow up on Autism Blogger.

Services for children with autism

Shell's picture

I was wondering if you all could answer some servey questions about autism. I found a new organization  founded by teachers who teach children with autism.  If you would like to take the servey let me know, they don't ask for any personal information just your view point. I think this is great since if they get enough responds  they will be willing to provide more great services for our children.

The Bully and the Crazy Boy

seebert's picture

I recently got a message on facebook about a friend whose son was suffering from cyber- and real-life bullying.  And suddenly I remembered a Sci-Fi story that made all the difference in the world for me _The Bully and the Crazy Boy_ by Marc Stiegler.  While I sadly no longer have a copy of the original, I remembered the parable "story within a story" that made all the difference- and after getting permission from the author, I've posted it to my blog in hopes of inspiring a new generation of autistics to just stand up and be crazy. As MacGyver once said- if you don't want to be noticed or touched, the solution is to look downright untouchable.
