Speech Therapy

In March of 2011, we started taking Lala to speech therapy.  She would go once a week for one hour.  The room was set up with cameras so that we could observe the session.  She was three and we were seeing so much improvement.  When Lala was diagnosed with Autism in May of 2011, we were told that she would get speech therapy for free through the district.  Well, we stopped the speech therapy in Mid-August of 2011.  Once she started school and after going to some Autism classes, we realized that she needed more speech therapy.  So, we tried going back, but there was a waiting list.  So, we went to a place closer to home.  She goes twice a week for half an hour.  We have been going since October of 2011.  Her first session for the week has been with the same therapist.  This therapist is great with Lala.  The second session has had 5 therapists since we started.  The fourth therapist was the only one I had a problem with.  She only had three sessions with Lala, but every time I walked out thinking I could have done a better job.  I think the therapist was young and did not have much experience.

Well, when I took Lala to her second session this week the 4th therapist left because she was overwhelmed.  I wasn't surprised, but that meant someone new.  Thus, we have our 5th therapist.  This therapist also had experience with ABA therapy.  So, I watched and observed.  OMG!  She was awesome!  I hope the 5th therapist stays for a long time.  Not only will this benefit Lala, but it will give me a chance to learn new techniques to use with Lala at home.

Does the school have the speech therapist on campus? Why the waiting list?

LalasMom's picture

Oh, Lala was going to a private speech therapist before she started school.  Since she was going to get speech therapy at school we stopped the private ST.  We tried going back to the private ST, but one of their therapist left and all the time slots were full.  Thus, we were put on a waiting list.  So, I looked for other private agencies and found one closer to home.

Now back to your original question, yes the school has the speech therapist on campus.  We just thought Lala needed more speech therapy other than the one she gets at school.
