The Dollar Store and Toilet Mirrors

The Dollar Store! I was just there on Friday when I had an entire 40 minutes to myself while Wyatt was OT. Of course, I can't take Wyatt there. He gets wild-eyed and runs through the store grabbing as much as his arms can carry. He's like the illustration of how we all feel about the Dollar Tree/99 Cent Store.

Let's see, I got coloring books, batteries, and lots of plastic bins. It seems like the dollar store is the only place you can find a decent coloring book these days. I looked for some toilet mirrors, as Shootingstars suggested in her idea to keep Wyatt seated on the potty. (By the way, the ABA therapists LOVE the idea). They had these itty-bitty mirrors 2/$100 in these gorgeous faux silver frames. And then they had some 8 x 10 mirrors in like a poster frame material. And there was one lone oval mirror on a stand. I would have had to go over to the Beauty Aisle to see if they still had any of these suction-cup-backed mirrors in funky foam shapes, except my 40 minutes was almost up, so I couldn't go to that side of the store. That suction cup mirror would be perfect for the toilet seat lid.

But, I came to the conclusion that I was going to have to go to Target/Wal-Mart for more of a full-length mirror to put in front of the toilet for when Wyatt is sitting on it. I don't think an itty-bitty mirror would work on the wall in front of the potty because I think he would want to get up to yank the mirror off the wall so he could hold it.

Potty training update: One of the ABA supervisors told me that Wyatt has to feel calm and relaxed before he will go potty. So yesterday, the therapist and I got Wyatt all watered and juiced-up and sat him on his little potty. We put a train sounds cassette in the player and we swayed him from side to side and sang "pee pee pee pee" over and over again in a soothing voice. He insisted on clutching a towel over his privates. I think he wanted to pee into it, like he goes in his diaper. It's so cute, though, he looks really modest when he tugs the towel down. He fell asleep on the potty, but when we got him in a waking-up state he let go and fully peed. It's a good thing we had the towel around because he's really too big for the little plastic potty, so he really peed mostly on the seat. To help him fit onto that potty we took the back lid off. It was the cheapest, most generic looking potty, but it was the only one that looked like it would fit him.

I am glad the mirror idea

I am glad the mirror idea went over. Anything to help his take the leap to the toilet. I just feel for you and Marc. I have this thing, I cannot stand places where there is a mirror in front of the toilet. Like our Taco Johns the sink is directly in front of the  toilet and I hate seeing myself like that.
