Gift Ideas for Autism Spectrum Kids

Our daughter is 9 and getting more and more difficult to buy for but up until now there have been some great things for her. Each kid has their special interests but for the most part these gifts will be great for any ASD kid.

Twister Moves Game- It’s Twister to music. The narrator on the CD tells the players which arm or foot to move where all to really up beat music. Maddie loves to play this with typical friends too.

Word Puzzle Books- These can be addicting to our daughter she wants to finish the book in one sitting. She likes age appropriate word finds, cross word puzzles, picture find puzzles and code puzzles.

Giant Therapy Ball- A huge 50” diameter rubber ball, great to play catch with, roll on or sit on while doing some other activity.

Polly Pockets- Little tiny dolls with rubber clothes and accessories to wear, great for fine motor and imaginative play. (She seems to have out grown these but even last year loved playing with them)

Art Materials- Maddie got a real art canvas and paint set that she loved. She sat for an afternoon painting a picture for her room.

Play Kitchen Sets- For the younger ASD child this is a great gift for imaginative play. We played picnic, restaurant, cookie shop, babysitting and cooking school with our set. She’s 9 and still wants to play these games. (Ikea has a great aluminum bakery set for cheap)

Cook Books for Kids- I get Maddie in the real kitchen whenever possible she loves looking at the pictures of all the different foods you can make and when we make them together she learns.

Musical Instrument- If they have an interest in something, drums, piano, recorder, guitar get them a toy version with sheet music. Our daughter loved the toy piano.

Classic Board Games- We can never have enough of these, age appropriate of course. Some of our favorites are Monopoly Jr., The Allowance Game, Scrabble Jr., Yahtzee.

Books- Age appropriate picture books I find are best for kids to enjoy on their own. I love new books too to read to her.

This is just a few things that have worked for us in the past we are getting into dance now and she wants all things related to dance this year, Music CD’s, Bella Dancerella, Dance Clothes etc. We’ll see what she actually plays with it’s always somewhat of a guessing game for kids with Autism.

Renee:
We have found that Marissa loves to play with her Nintendo DS. She is able also to interact with my 9 year old son while he is playing. This has helped her with her reading too.
