Group Home Placement - Military

I have recently been assigned to Vancouver Washington.  I requested the Reassignment because my Wife and I, along with our daughter’s biological father felt it would be best for her.  We felt that placing her here in Washington where there are family members would be good for when I get reassigned again.  We are in the early stages of having her placed into a group home.  Bryn is one of our six children.  Her twin sister is also autistic but is high functioning.  Bryn on the other hand is severely autistic.  They will be 15 on Saturday.  It is hard to believe.  I have been an active part of their lives for 12 of those years.  They are my girls J

Because of her continual aggressive behavior, even with medication, we have been told by both her physician and psychologist that it would be in Bryn’s best interest and the family’s if we pursue placement in a group home.  This has been a decision we have put off for some time.  We have discussed this continually with her natural father and his wife and have asked them to help us out.

The process up until mid week has been nothing short than a headache.  Between dealing with the Department of Disabilities’ and the natural father and his wife, well let’s just say it’s been difficult.  My family is still in Arkansas while we wait for the house to sell so I can bring them out.  In the mean time I have spent several weeks on the phone trying to make things happen with the intake and the assessment.

I am planning on bringing my daughter here in August if the house doesn’t sell.  I am hopping I can get the services in time from DDD.  Hoping to get help from her natural father has been nothing less than a disappointment.   My wife and I were hoping that he and his wife would be there, but all we are getting from them are prayers.  Not to knock that, but I would of expected them to be a little proactive at the same time, given the sacrifices our family has made in the last 13 years.   The “It will all work out one way or the other” just doesn’t work for me.  Sorry, the military side of me of doing what it takes to complete the task.

At least the good news is that through EFMP (Exception Family Members Program) that helps military members and their family, I am getting some help and guidance. I was able to find out about a waiver that will be needed due to lack of funding and services.  I was also told that I can obtain a case worker once the intake is complete, without having to do another assement being how she already has Medicaid.  If there is anyone who is in the military who has a child with autism I would really like to hear from you.  Our family has allot to do before I get reassigned again or head overseas.
