Kool-Aid Play Dough

Found this play dough recipe:

3/4 cup flour

3/4 cup salt

3/4 cup water

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

food coloring

Mix all together, store covered in fridge, keeps for a week.

This morning I made up this dough.  It needed a lot more flour and salt (maybe about 1/4 cup more each) and maybe less oil.  Granted I did use Gluten Free flour, which may yield a different consistency than regular flour.  I had bought some GF flour a while back and I wanted to use it up.  I   After I put in the food coloring and some raspberry flavoring for a cool scent, the therapist said I should try pink lemonade flavor Kool-Aid instead of food coloring.  The reason for the pink lemonade is because the dye is really light.  With regular food coloring, some if it got on my carpet and I wish it hadn't.

We moved the dough fun from Wyatt's work desk into the kitchen.  I put him in an empty kiddie pool (one of those $7 cheapie thin hard plastic shell ones from Wal-Mart) in the middle of the kitchen.  Since the consistency of the dough was loose, we had fun making "dough bombs" and letting them splurch into the empty pool.  Afterwards, I wiped the tub out with paper towels and sprayed it outside on the patio with the hose.

That sounds like fun. My

That sounds like fun. My problem would be Marcel puts play dough in his

mouth so its a choking concern.

If you make your own, you

If you make your own, you realize that there isn't anything in it that isn't pretty much edible.  The home-made stuff is silkier than the commercial stuff, so it seems like it would be less likely to be a choking hazard.  Wyatt likes to eat the commercial stuff, but he didn't try it with the home made stuff because he thought it was some yucky food I was trying to make him eat.  He tried to feed the stuff to ME.  I think he thought that because we had him help us "cook" it by dumping in the ingredients and mixing it up.

I bet it smells nicer too =)

Yeah, I would bet that the signature PlayDoh smell comes from preservatives and color-fast dyes.

I had a slightly different

I had a slightly different recipe that used Cream of Tartar (probably has a bit different texture), but I can't find it.  I may have thrown it out after my son got through the Play Doh stage.  Sorry.  I like the idea of adding Kool-Aid instead of food coloring for color and for scent.  Too bad I never thought of it when my son was growing up.

I knew there was a reason I

I knew there was a reason I ran out and bought some Cream of Tartar.  Maybe I saw that recipe, too.  I've been looking at that Cream of Tartar, scratching my head and wondering why the heck I had to have it.  Maybe it was something to do with Gluten Free stuff I was trying for a while.  Probably biscuits...  what a pain to make Gluten Free biscuits...  It just never happened.  Wyatt LOVES biscuits.
