I have two adopted children that have been diagnosed with everything from ADHD to RAD. Both were exposed to drugs and alcohol in the womb but doctors won't dx fetal alcohol syndrome because they don't fit "that box" That's the trouble I'm finding with this disorder. How do you fit a child into a dx box when they defy all the boxes. Both children are very diferent but with some key similarities mostly in sensory integration. They have quirks that can be so frustrating because you can't figure out what they are thinking. After much personal reading and research the dx that kept popping up over and over again was aspergers, and autistic spectrum disorders. Great I thought, I can get a dx and then finally some help! No such luck! Their vocabularies are normal" said one doctor. "With no prenatal or early infancy history we can't say for sure" said another. "they fit some, but not all symptoms" "Accept that he just has ADHD and an antisocial attitude" said one doctor about my then 4-year-old! Because I homeschool my children I have been told that I don't qualify for any interventions through the school system, not that I really wanted them anyway. The only treatment I have been offered is medication. That doesn't address the the more troubling issues of sensory integration and not sleeping through the night (unless I want to give my three year old sedatives that make her psycotic. So my Husband and I are "going it alone" so to speek. We read and read and read some more. We bought a trampoline and some other sensory toys. We are doing our own home version of occupational and physical therapy. And it is working! We are changing our diet and all of us feel better! My son told me that he used to "feel all cloudy in his head" but now he doesn't. We read everything about ASD we can find. Some of it we use some we don't. We decided we were not waiting for doctors to get a clue anymore. The more improvements I see in my kids the more I know we are on the right track. What I'm trying to say is that we who live with this day in and dayout are the best judges of what works and what doesn't work and what to do about it.

You seem to be doing a fabulous job with your kids - it's never easy, that's for sure. We had big problems trying to get the right diagnosis for our son. He had symptoms of ADHD, as well as sensory issues and OCD behaviours. A similar story to yours in a way. Finally we pushed to have a proper assessment for autism and sure enough, we hit the nail on the head. We share more of our story on our blog www.managingaustism.com. Keep up the good work!
PS. Have you tried a 'Network' chiropractor - not sure what part of the world you're from but we have chiropractors trained in this way in Australia. The practice is not at all intrusive, and our son reports his head and body clearing and feeling good!
