Autism Software

helpingtogrow's picture

My son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2 years and 3 months. A month later he was on intensive one-on-one home-based therapy. By five, he was in a regular mainstream school, totally indistinguishable from his peers.

I soon found there was very little software available to teach children with Autism. This document outlines the information on Autism I have acquired over the years and the computer software I used to aid my son's recovery.

To view our complete software list, click on the "Products" tab above.

It is important to understand that without any Autism therapy or intervention, a child with Autism or PDD will absorb far less information and knowledge from the environment than a typical child. A typical child will start to talk at 1.5 to 2 years with almost no help from his parents or siblings. He will then acquire around 6 new words a day and will have a vocabulary of an amazing 10,000 words before the age of seven. A child with Autism may become verbal much later and have poor language and social skills if he is not given speech and behavior therapy. At least initially, a child with Autism must be given a strong knowledge base i.e. he must be taught speech, language and age-appropriate behavior.

Do you Farkel?

Todd Fugere's picture

My family LOVES to play games. One of the newest ones we've been hooked on is a dice game called Farkel. It's similar to Yahtzee, but way more fun.

I think games are a great way to bring family together. Some other's we like are: boggle, sequence, backgammon, othello, battleship, monopoly, phase 10, uno, cribbage, pictionary, mexican train (dominos), tri-ominos, upwords, gin rummy, blackjack, poker and sorry. We also have ping pong and air hocky downstairs. Not to mention a ton of yard games that we play (when it is nice out). We also play video games togther. We have Wii (Wii bowling is the best) and Playstation 2 (Guitar hero rules!!) and Playstation 3 and I think I have just about every old school video game ever made on my laptop.

So yeah, we are complete game junkies. It's a great way to spend some quality family time. I don't think there is a day that goes by that we don't play something together as a family. Give Farkel a try if you haven't, it's really fun and addicting (cheap too, I think it goes for around 10 bucks).

What games does your family play?

Playtime With Zeebu - Developing Social Communication

Zeebu's picture

Hello Everyone,I am the dad of two great kids on the spectrum, Michael 6 and Jack 5. My wife and I deal with challenges every day, like many of you, and look for ways to help our kidos develop skills to minimize these challenges. This has lead us to create a new product: Playtime with Zeebu.Playtime with Zeebu is a learning aide designed for children on the spectrum that allows you to build social awereness with, and for, your child. It's a vehicle that will allow you to stay engaged with your child longer, and with purpose.  Playtime with Zeebu helps you develop the following:

o Perspective taking - How do my actions affect those around me.
o Whole body listening - What nonverbal signs are given by my friends that tell me how they feel.
o Calming techniques - When we are having a "melt down", what can I do to become calm so I can think.

All of this is done in a "Blues Clues" type setting that is fun and engaging for children on the spectrum. To find out more about us and view a sample of the video, please visit: www.playtimewithzeebu.com.
