Surfing The Net with Children

I wrote this for another site, but thought the information would be good enough for a blog post:

There is a huge variety of kid friendly, educational sites full of games, coloring pages, and activities for your little ones.  Children as young as three can have a fun and engaging online experience.  Of course, the internet is not without its dangers.  While most parents are concerned with inappropriate web content, the chief issue for preschool aged internet users is not exposure to inappropriate content, but frustration with advertisements, browser buttons, and other superficial parts of a website.  Parents should always supervise the use of computers by their children and select age appropriate, useful, and easy to navigate websites for them to enjoy.  A great example of a good website for preschool age children is Starfall.com which promotes reading skills.  Noggin.com has all of your child’s favorite characters and is full of terrific, exciting games.  Uptoten.com has hundreds of games, cartoons, coloring pages, and activities centered on traditional education themes.  It does not take long for children to be able to navigate their favorite web pages all by themselves and they enjoy the sense of accomplishment they receive from doing so.  Once your child has a good grasp on how the mouse and various navigation buttons work, consider downloading a kid safe browser for your child to use.  Kid safe browsers usually restrict access to a few, pre-approved, websites while blocking pop ups and preventing unwanted content from reaching your child.  A personal favorite of mine is the KidSurf browser (http://www.kid-surf.com.)  This browser is free to download, easy to set up, and has an excellent menu of quality kid sites.  The Zac Browser (http://www.zacbrowser.com/) is a browser specially designed for users with autism.  This broswer is navigated strictly by flash images and does not contain "back" and "forward" buttons.  It can only be closed by pressing a hot key combination so as to avoid frustration for children who might accidently close the browser.  The content is far more limited that that of the KidSurf browser.

Cindy or WyattsMom, I think, put up a link for Zac Browser not too long ago - or was that a different one? Does someone have a "kid tough" computer that surfs the net out there? - I might even consider one of those for my own next time - I'm tired of "glitchy" breakdowns and having to get a new laptop every couple of years. They just don't seem to stand up for very long.

It was me..... and yes it
