hold on to someday! my daughter was saying 'i want__' sentences and totally lost the ability for months! we thought she was LOSING skills for a while there. such a hopeless feeling .... heartbreaking!! then, the words came back. people tell me 'this happens' but it wasn't much of a comfort in the moment. am thrilled for you he said goodbye!

Keep in mind that 2 1/2 is really so young. I just KNOW that you will see so much improvement. Okay, I seriously apologize if this is stuff you already know (chances are that you do), but there are therapies that your medical insurance and regional developmental disabilities center will pay for such as Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy. When my son was first diagnosed at 2 1/2, no one told me about OT and I didn't find out until several months later. OT is good for so many things, specifically motor skills. Also, no one told me that there are different kinds of Speech Therapy. There's a more educationally based one and then there is a more medically based "oral-motor" therapy. Also, some kids may need Physical Therapy.
If there is a way to add more hours to Ben's intervention program, go for it! The general consensus is, the more hours the better. If something isn't working out, you can always drop it.
If you live near a university, you may be able to enroll in a research study that offers free therapy. Personally, I think free therapy is the greatest thing ever! :)

Does Ben babble still? Have you considered possibly teaching sign language?
At 2 Michael barely spoke. He babbled and babbled until after his 3rd birthday. They started teaching a few signs and he actually started talking a little. Then once he started school he has actually been attempting new words when before we had to fight to get little things out of his mouth.
So be patient and hopefully you find good therapists to work with him. And just keep hoping. I too had lost hope for Michael to talk, and now we are on your way to communication. In the months since he started school I would say he has progressed about 6 months developmentally with speech. Not bad for only 3 months of school thus far.
