Hello bloggers my purpose for being on the autism blog is to learn from parents, peers, educators and experts. I am a Graduate student working on a degree in Special Education. My current interactions with children and individuals with autism have been limited due to my job placement. It is my hope that I will learn how to be a better educator to all children and individuals but especially those who learn in a different way. I believe it's my job as a future educator so I can make students educational experience a delightful one. I would also like people to respond to questions I may have about autism, so I will receive a better understanding through the blog and in my class. I will also respond to others this will give me a chance to understand what others are doing and going through.

It is great you are learning
It is great you are learning now. I think the Special Education field is growing and the need for quality teachers in the area of autism is at an all time high. Much of the information on Structured Teaching, from the TEACCH program, out of North Carolina can serve as a GREAT foundation for you. They have an excellent website. If you are interested in books, Katheen Quill has a good books which explain communication and improving communication in children with autism.
It is definatly an area that one can specialize in. And the need is growing. When I started I my school district, there was one Instructional Specialist in Autism, now there are 7 of us!!!

Welcome, I too am a first
Welcome, I too am a first timer to the blog, with this being my first comment. First let me applaud you for being a future educator and for taking the extra step to get parents opinions and foresight so you can better understand autism. I wish more educators can follow in your footsteps. As a mother of an autistic child there is nothing more frustrating than to have teachers that don't understand and refuse to become more educated on autism. I have had some bad experiences with a few teachers and a principal that only see an autistic child as a disruption to thier classroom and lower No Child Left Behind scores. So again I thank you.
Hi! I am new to the blog
Hi! I am new to the blog also. I am an elementary teacher and totally agree with you. I believe that teachers need to understand all disabilities. They need to especially understand autism because of the high occurrence. It infuriates me that some teachers expect every child to act the same, sit still, be quiet and do worksheets. They don't take the time to understand why a specific behavior is done or put the effort into finding a solution. They need to realize that everyone is different, they think and react in different ways. Many teachers also go right to the negative when a child misbehaves. This drives me crazy. Instead of reflecting on their teaching and the way they dealt with the situation they put the blame on the student. They say that the child is lazy, doesn't want to put effort into it, is manipulating, wants to make decisions, etc. I think that there are too many teachers out there that like the power and authority. They get in power struggles with the students which get them nowhere.
I hope that in the future there are more teachers that want to understand the many disabilities that effect todays children.
That's great! A++ for you!
